Treasury Gardens

Treasury Gardens is an inner-city park located in the heart of Melbourne, Australia. It is one of the city’s oldest parks, having been originally established in 1840, and was once home to the Treasury Building.

The gardens are located on the site of the first land grant in Melbourne, which was given to John Pascoe Fawkner in 1837. The land was previously occupied by a waterhole known as the “Black Swamp”, which was located where Treasury Gardens is today. Fawkner established a Government farm on the site, but it was eventually abandoned and the land remained unused until 1840 when Robert Russell purchased the area and established a nursery on the site.
In 1851, the land was sold to the Government
