The first people to live in Wantirna were the Dja Dja Wurrung and Bidewell people. They were hunter-gatherers who lived on the land, hunting kangaroos, goannas, and other marsupials. The Dja Dja Wurrung was one of the largest tribes in the area. The Dja Dja Wurrung had six clans, which were made up of smaller families. They were the Wurundjeri, Woiwurrung, Taungurong, Djadjawurrung, Yawe and Boonwurrung word groups. These clans lived in the area surrounding the Plenty River.

I was riding my bike from Knoxfield to Wantirna in late October. I passed through the old Wantirna Cemetery and Wantirna Primary School and thought to myself, ‘I wonder what the history of Wantirna and the surrounding area is. The Wantirna area was first occupied by the Wurundjeri tribe. It was known as Mooroopna or Mooroobooluk. In 1842, the first property was purchased in Wantirna, although the settlers did not stay long.
